Common Signs Your Car’s A/C Isn’t Working

When it comes to automotive HVAC systems, they aren’t terribly different in principle than the HVAC system in your home. That also means there are really only a few easily recognizable signs that something is wrong. If you notice:

  • Weak airflow from A/C vents
  • Warm/hot air coming out of vents
  • Unusual noises when the A/C is active
  • Mildew smell when the A/C is on
  • A/C cycles on and off a lot

What Causes Problems With Your Car’s A/C?

Weak and/or warm air coming out of the air conditioning vents is likely the most common symptom. Low refrigerant levels can cause those issues. The fix is very easy; most auto parts stores sell recharging kits that are easy for most people to use.

There could also be blockages in the vents or filters that slow down airflow to the passenger cabin. Replacing the cabin air filter, using a vacuum cleaner, or using a can of compressed air can quickly and cheaply clear the blockage.

Additionally, replacing the cabin filter can also take care of the mildew smell that sometimes happens. If that doesn’t work, spraying disinfectant into the exterior air intakes while running the fan on low should do the trick.

How Do You Fix Noises Coming From Your Car’s A/C?

Hearing clicking, grinding and/or squealing noises when you turn on the air conditioner could be the sign of a larger problem. This is likely a mechanical or electrical issue that will require some expert assistance.
